Every large company has a degree of low-priority data residing on expensive tier 1 disk arrays, the question is how much? Identifying low-priority data can be achieved with various tools but moving it to cheaper storage, without putting business services at risk is more complicated.

Moving data is something we do regularly, either as a task on its own, or as part of complete data-centre migrations. We know what will be the likely problems, how to reduce system outages to the minimum and how to organise the changes around the migration.
As part of moving the entire data-centre for the European leader of flight planning and baggage handling services, ItegraL migrated all the storage from a tier-1 disk to a secondary storage array, mirroring this across site.
Various types of data were assessed and then migrated onto the appropriate final storage tier according to service priority and data retention requirements.
There was no loss of data and no unplanned outages to any services.
